Project Type
Board Game
Date
October 2022
Role
Art Lead
This board game was created for my Intro to Game Development midterm project. The team consisted of me, Nicholas Bonofiglio, and Colby Goltia; I was the Art Lead on the project.
When I look back at the game my team and I created, I am rather proud of the work we did and how the prototype came out. The Haunted Carnival has many aspects about it that I wish I saw more in board games. The theme that we went with was very well-timed for the Halloween season. Luckily, we were able to mesh very well together when we worked on this project together. Everyone made an effort to participate and using each of our skills we worked on different tasks. Thanks to this, we were able to have our prototype done on time. There were a few complications of course. Although for the most part, the communication was very clear, there was one instance where there was a miscommunication. When we were creating one of our sprint logs, I thought they wanted me to create the concept art for all the characters, so I told them how long that would take. It wasn’t until later that we realized that we miscommunicated and that they were asking how long finished pieces would take. In the end, it wasn’t too much of an issue, and we were able to get enough art done to get the point across for the prototype. 3D printing was another thing that gave us a hard time. We didn’t think to compensate for the stands for the pieces. As a result, some of the pieces were larger than the squares on the board. Each print also took a lot of time to do. This leads me to the final issue: time. With all the homework I had to do and work, I found it hard to make time to stay on top of my work for this class. Throughout making the Haunted Carnival, I learned some lessons that will be able to help me next time that help me next time of which will be very helpful for our team. One thing that I want to make sure we do next time is lower our scope a bit. Although we were able to get a prototype done in time, I wish we could get more done for it. Something that I wouldn’t do again, due to the limited time we had, is trying to 3D print as much as we had planned initially. Taking all things into consideration though, I am very happy with my team for creating the Haunted Carnival.
